WHAT WOULD OR WHY WOULD MY CAR USE EXCESSIVE AMOUNTS OF GAS.

There could be many different reasons;
among the most common:

-glogged air filter
-dirty/defective MAF sensor
-under inflated tires
-defective thermostat (stuck open)
-leak in the fuel system
-dirty spark plugs
-restricted exhaust
-bad O2 sensor
-bad coolant sensor

If you've never had a tune up, now would be a good time ;)
Also, if you check your pcm for codes, you may find something of interest.
