I own a 1989 Chevy Cavalier, 2.8 liter engine. When started, the engine will run smooth for about one minute and then idle down and run very rough, surges, and stalls at times. The engine will start right back up if it does stall. When driving down the road, the car runs great, but when you let off the accellerator, it idles rough and wants to stall. I have read a couple of your other entries and did check the IAC unit by removing it, but leaving it plugged in. The rod on the IAC unit was out about half way when it was removed. When I turned the key on, it did not move. When I turned the key off, the rod then came out all the way and back in about half. I cleaned the unit and the port where it goes into the valve body. It still idles rough! Any suggestions? Thanks!!

I think the IAC is bad. When you remove it and turn ign. to "on", the pintle should move all the way out.
