1996 Chevy Caprice Catalytic Converters

I replace my exhast to flowmaters and discover that my cataytic converters where removed a few people advised that I should put them on and some told me leave it. Will this harm my car if I leave them off.

If the check engine light is not coming On and there's no driveability problem I'll leave as it is- when emission testing/smog comes you have to put the Cat back on.
