how do i know if timing chain is broke

You can remove the distributor cap and have helper crank engine over is the rotor turning while its cranking over if not -could be the chain or the distribuitor drive gear is sheared off

More effective way is to remove the valve covers and watch the valves open and close-no movement answers your question
