1987 Chevy Caprice V8 Wheel Drive Type unknown Automatic 87500 miles

on my 1987 chevy caprise. the test for the alternator shows that its only putting out about 5 amps. but i heard that that was not always acurate. what i did was run the car and then disconect the positive on the battery and it kept running. is that a good way to test it?
