what color is the wire that controls dashlight, that would be on the factory wiring stereo harness

There is probably a dimmer control on the headlamp switch, if that gets rotated all the way, no dash lites.

Also, check the instrument lamps fuse and gage fuse, not only check the fuse, use a voltage tester on the fuse circuit.
