1977 Chevy Caprice Signal Lever

I have an old Chevy Caprice that, after a period of time, managed to have its turn signal lever break off. The signal still works fine, but the lever has been completed removed from the steering column.

In an attempt to get it repaired, I have called around, and the best estimate I've received has been about $230 (from a local reputable mechanic). Is this a fair estimate for parts + labor?

Over the phone, the estimate for parts given was roughly $75 (+/- $10), leaving the total labor to be somewhere around $155.

In addition, is it possible to complete a not-as-certified DIY repair, and if so, could you guide me in a general direction as how to do that?

Ok here is what I would do. I would get a turn signal repair switch (pic below) from you local parts store for about 25 dollars and then get a turn signal lever from you parts store or a wrecking yard and do this yourself. You pull the steering wheel off (you will need a steering wheel puller and lock plate puller) and put the repair piece in and screw the lever into it and put the steering wheel back on and be done with it.
