1999 Chevy Camaro V8 Automatic

what would cause the gears not to change after it gets hot. i drove it more than 20 miles then it wouldn't change out of first until i let it set and cool down

Your transmission is slipping,check the transmission fluid level and condition if okay bring it in and get it pressure tested to find out more what's going on.
