My brake warning light has come on and wont go off. I added brake fluid to see if that was the problem and the light still remains. Any advice on my first step?

You sure its not coming from the parking brake switch

There may be a sensor indicating brake wear or that one side of the hydraulics are beginning to fail or the master cylinder.
