1989 Chevy Camaro Get handle off of shifter

How do I get the handle off of the shifter on the console. I want to replace the broken console and the Grip has to come off the shifter. It has a slot in the back. does it take a special tool?

there is probably a U shaped piece of wire that you have to pry out with a small screw driver, then the knob should pull straight up.
