I accidently drove my car with no water/coolent in it and when I stopped it smoked for a minute or two. When I filled it back up with water there were little cracking sounds, I wanted to know if I have done serious damage to it and how to check. I drove it back home about 30 miles after that and it drove fine.

Well my first guess would be youre cyl hd's or youre hd gasket also would be effected. Also another big concern would be the bottom end bearings. All you could do is replaced the cooling system parts, That caused the overheating, Then see what happens, Hopefully things work out.

If you put cold water into a overheated engine then you might have cracked a head, also the valves get extremely hot and I have repaired overheated engines that have actually had a broken valve due to adding cold water to a super hot engine. Are you getting any wayer in oil or blowing water out of tailpipe?
