Back the valves off , then try this. The best way to set valves is with engine running ( this can get a little messy, but a papaer clip unfolded can be used to block two pushrod holes at a time ) with engine running loosen rocker arm ( one at a time ) till you hear clattering, slowly tighten it up till clattering stops, then tighten another half turn. Also set timing back as needed after doing this. If timing was advanced by 30 degrees after you set valves that would explain why it wouldnt start, too much timing = run very hot
