My 69 has a high performance 350. It has been running good with the timing being right on and produces plenty of horsepower. Went out to do a couple of 1/4 mile passes. The first pass of the day the engine wound up good. Dumped the clutch and about a second after that it started backfiring, could not tell if it was just the exhaust or if it was both exhaust and intake. It would idle good but did not like to have any throttle applied. When I shut off the engine it desieled for a few seconds. The timing chain does not appear to be stretched since the reaction is within 2-5 degrees from forward to reverse on the cranshaft to rotorgoing forward to reverse. Don't think it jumped a tooth on the timing since it idles OK. Should I look at iginition or is this a valve spring/valve timing problem?

Check the fuel pressure/accelerator pump/power valve and ignition wires leaking in to another and valve timing again.
