i think i have a short in my tilt steering. every time i lower it the day time running lights go out.. how easy is it to take off the steering wheel column cover and find the problem

It sounds like you are correct. However, since the vehicle has an airbag, you really have to know what you are doing. If you have no experience with them, I recommend having it done by someone trained to work on them. The airbag can actually deploy if you are not careful and then you will be into a lot more money.
