2001 Chevy Blazer four wheel drive button

Went to look at a blazer and the person before us pushed the 4x4 button and the light wouldn't go out. What does this mean. a big repair or something simple?

is the truck actually in 4wd? if it is that usually means the 4wd encoder motor is bad and it costs about $600 just for the part.
