2000 Chevy Blazer What could it be?

Driving home from town yesterday we noticed a smell similar to welding. When we arrived at our home, we pinpointed the source of the smell to the rear passenger side wheel area.
We felt all of the hubcaps and only the passenger rear one was hot. We removed the tire and wheel. We then felt the part that the wheel goes on and found it to also be very hot
There was no accompanying grinding noises or squeaks.
Just wondering what could it be?

Do you normally set the parking brake when you stop? If you do not see any fluid leaking from the very back side of the circular area (the brakes) then you most likely have a seized brake cable or shoe.

A free brake inspection can be performed at many shops. Or you can try turning the hot wheel with tire installed by hand with the entire rear of the vehicle lifted, front tires blocked and transmission in neutral (engine not running). Both rear tires should turn independently with little effort.
