The service four wheel drive light is on and the 4 four wheel drive doesn't work. how can i check to see the code and what are the most common problems when the service light is on?

Need to have a scanner to check for codes
An OBDII reader will not get you to the transfer case and its codes
Most local repair shop should have scanner to access and get the codes for you
