1998 Chevy Blazer rear end cover

My mechanic told me that my rear end cover is rotting away, and needs to be changed. I have never heard of anything like this. Does anyone have any experience with this occuring?

very common to see that happening specially if living or truck came from a cold area where they used salt on the road
