need to drop my fuel tank to replace the pump?

I have pretty much determined I need a new fuel pump. I was wondering if I need to drop my fuel tank to replace the pump? I have a 4.3 litre engine.

Yes! Then tap the lock ring off with an unscrewing motion with a brass punch.
