Won't shift into overdrive

won't shift into overdrive causing poor mileage due to a higher RPM. could this be a sensor problem?

If your transmission is picking up a fault it will go into protection mode which is no overdrive. This may just be a solenoid or sensor. Unfortunately it could be something more serious like a pressure problem. Long term running in this condition will most likely cause damage. I suggest having a transmission shop do a diagnostic on it. That is a small price to pay when compared with a rebuilt or new transmission.
