Are you refering to the drive shaft? If so, you should be able to remove it without removing the exhaust. Can you explain what is happening?

It should come out without dropping the exhaust. I have pulled the one on my '97 and others without dropping the pipe.
Has the crossover pipe been replaced with an aftermarket?
