1996 Chevy Blazer light lights on dash when 4WD is in but d

Is it possible the dash switch itself is not working. Will that stop my 4wd from working?

Yes, the switch could be the problem. However, before replacing it, check the actuator on the transfer case. See if there is power to it when you try to engage the 4wd. If there is power, the actuator itself may be bad.
