I have a 1995 Chevy Blazer LT 4X4 with a Vortec V6 and codes tell me the first step in resolving the problem is to replace the O2 sensor. I just need to know it's location. Obviously with 180+K miles I don't want to buy a manual to fix the problem or take it to a mechanic, and I can't trade the vehicle while it's running like it is. I have mid level mechanical experience. Where is the O2 sensor located?

there is one located on each exhaust pipe. if you have a v6 there will be two, if its a straight 6 you will have one before the catalytic convertor somewhere after the exhaust manifold and before the catalytic convertor, very easy to spot as its the only electrical sensor running to the exhaust pipe.

if the code said sensor 1 bank one it is the o2 sensor on the driver side exhaust pipe before the catalytic convertor on a v6 engine. On a straight 6 it is located before the convertor on the only exhaust piping there is.

if its sensor 2 bank one, then its the one after the catalytic convertor.

This is exactly the info I needed. The o2 sensors one and two have been bad for some time now. As a result MPG went to around 9 and I was getting black smoke from exhaust, from the burn off of the extra gas. Spark plugs completely clogged and burnt black. After awhile the truck just wouldn't start.

I don't know much about cars but I can turn a wrench. I start by replacing spark plugs. After a lil cussing from lack of work space I get 4,5,and 6 flopped out. 1 is not accessible to me because I lack an extension for my ratchet, 2 and 3 I can't access because drive shaft is in the way. The truck does start at this point. Now, I decide to forget about plugs for the time being and move onto the O2 sensors.

My buddy tells me sensors are a piece of cake. Just find it on the exhaust manifold and replace it. Searching and crawling and climbing and oh yeah more cussing. I can't find the damn things. Aggravated I come inside search the site and find this post.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH BLACKTOP. Found em in 2.2 now I just need to get the burnt on rust encrusted hunks of junk off and flop em out.

I'll keep you informed on the rest of the project.
