The belt slipped off after rain. I put belt back on but it wouldn't charge battery and engine ran hot. belt now is on but loose, how do I tighten it? Does it need replacement and is it within the range of a occasional mechanic?

If it is loose, you have another problem. May be the tensioner has failed. Be sure it has spring tension and that the belt is routed properly. Something allowed it to come off in the first place, and that is the source problem
