So my car just died while going down the street. It would not start back up until the next day. The same thing happened about a week later. This time it just wouldnt start at all. It turns over. When I pulled the air filter off it looked like there was a fire in the throttle body. There are two pairs of wires going to two plastic clips that are now melted and deformed. I poured gas directly into the throttle body and it still did not start. There is no check engine light on. Someone told me they thought it was the fuel rails. Does this sound correct. It must have backfired. What would cause it to backfire?

I believe you have throttle body injection on a 91. Fuel rails are used on a multi port injection.

As far as the melted wires, something had to have burned them. If you saw a fire in the throttle body, was it coming from the wiring or was it down low in it?

Also, was the engine backfiring?

Let me know.

Joe

I did not hear any back firing and I did not see any smoke or fire. For all I know it has been like that for months. I just happened to notice it when the car died. There was no warning it just all of a sudden cut out. I read somewhere that if gas is not goin through the entire throttle body that sensors will cut off the electricity goin to the spark plugs. Im not sure if this is the problem either. I am guessing that the check engine light would come on if that were the problem. If it is not the throttle problem what else could it be. Possible ecu? Again it cut out a total of three times and the final time it would not start back up. The first two times it started up the next day. And it would not start until I let it sit for a long period of time. Longer then just cooling down the engine.
