1991 Chevy Blazer Can't get it out of 4 Low

When I put my blazer into 4 low, I can't get it to go back into 4 high without bending the linkage bar. When i do get it into 4 high, I have to crawl under the blazer take the linkage bar out and straighten it out to get it back to 2 wheel drive. What could be causeing this to happen?

does it shift by hand easy when the linkage is disconnected
