Engine Performance problem
1989 Chevy Beretta 6 cyl Automatic

I replaced the alternator and battery in an 89 Beretta. Now it idles badly, in park, but the engine races when I put it in gear. It has great accelleration and shifts okay.

retrace your steps, you may have accidentally unplugged a vacuum hose or cracked one even. or you may need a simple throttle body cleaning, the throttle plate may be sticking. check those items and get back to me with your findings

I have a 90 Beretta GT. I'm sure you have this fixed by now but in case anyone else is reading i've been told that when the battery is disconnected the Idle Air Control valve has to be relearned.
