2007 Chevy Aveo 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

I am writing to ask a question in regaurds to my mothers 2007 chevy aveo. When I checked her oil yesterday it seemed to be real thin and was dripping off the dip stick. What could be the nature of this problem.

Does Mom drive short trips less than 10-15 miles? Is it cold out where you live? If yes probably fuel containation due to short trips not getting oil hot enough to burn off fuel.
