I have a 05 Aveo, and have had no problems or major concerns until about a month ago. I was trying to see how slow my 0-60 time really was when I noticed the car was not shifting into 3rd, and thick white smoke came out the back. I looked at what few gages I have and the hold like and check engine light were flashing. I nursed it to a stop light. Put it in park and turned it off and restarted it. No problems. I still have the problem of shifting when I floor it. And up until today I only had the problem with smoke at that time. But today I was coming off the interstate and was already rolling and goosed it a little to beat the traffic that just got the green light, no smoke until I was at the next stop light and took off, then a little puff and no more. This has happened only these times, and doesn't last long. No unusual smells or performance or change in fuel economy. Why the smoke?

Hello -

If you need to get back with us, please let us know if this is just an Aveo, or an LS or LT.

Well, white smoke is normally an indication of a blown head gasket or one that is leaking, head slightly warped. That is the engine coolant burning in the combustion chamber.

Has your coolant level gone down? Has your oil level gone up and does it look milky colored?

Since you had the check engine light, what you might do, is go to Auto Zone (AZ) or O'Reilly's (OR) and for FREE they can pull the codes to the car. Most important: Once they check your codes, if they find something and you don't get it fixed and need to get back with us, please make sure you tell us exactly what the code was, number and all. Example, if the code was E0568 O2 Sensor bad. Then make sure you give us all of that. While there for FREE also they can bring their tester out and check your battery, alternator and starter.

Again, if you need to get back with us, please provide the info above and the results from AZ. This will help us with your diagnosis.
