I travel in the mountains with some steep grades(6-8%) Rather than ride my brakes , I usually shift down to 3rd or 2nd toslow the vehicle on some of the longer grades. Is this the wrong thing to do. Does this harm the transmission? I do have a trans temp guage and haven't noticed any big changes?

What you are doing is fine. It shouldn't hurt the trans.
