2002 Chevy Avalanche "cold start idle problem" nee

I have a 2002 chevy avalanche that idles up to about 2500 rpm on a cold start then almost instantly falls to about 400 or 500 rpm ; almost dies. I have new spark plugs i'm going to put in to see if that helps. I need any information that might help me determine what it is. Thanks.
