We have put a new starter on this astro. Starts fine. When you shift it from Drive to 3rd it grinds bad, and the abs light and break light come on you can shift from park all the way down to 1st, bypass 3rd and go back up to 3rd and it just clicks and will drive fine. But when going from park straight to 3rd grinds but will still go. The transmisson was suppose to be rebuilt a couple of months ago. And the starter was rebuilt twice, we but a new starter on it and it's starting fine. But we are still have the problems with the 3rd gear grinding, could some one help me please, give me a hint on what to replace. Thanks

First, it doesn't seem as the starter has anything to do with this problem. What I want you to check is the linkage from the shifter to the transmission. It may be loose causing the transmission to be actually stuck between two gears. When you bypass 3rd and go to 1st and back to 3rd, the linkage is coming from a different direction and may work properly. Let me know what you find.

Thanks, you taught me something on this one. I never heard of the neutral safety switch causing a grinding noise before. My question is how?
