bought the car within the last several weeks- ran great now its overheating- I do smell a little antifreeze smell at times but there are no leaks- antifreeze does look old- my ac only runs on the top vents so I thought then all of a sudden after many tries I turned it to vent only and it finally came air through the vents only for a short time and then went back to the top vents only-

The vent issue deals with a vacuum leak. The vent doors are actuated by engine vacuum, so look for leaks. As far as the overheating, have you tried replacing the thermostat?
