1999 Chevy Astro diagnostic trouble codes, without the read

I was told i could jump out two terminals and get the code by counting the flashes on the service engine light, what two terminals do i jump?? and where can i find the flash codes? without the diagnostic meter

1995 and older you can do so
1996 and newer need an OBDII reader
