1998 Chevy Astro van quits firing

what causes my van to ping knock and quit firing when it gets hot, but when it cools off it runs good again until it gets hot again?

Hi:
There is a knock sensor on the car that is to advance the timing to its furthest point without allowing it to ping. I would start with that. Has the check engine light come on?
