1997 Chevy Astro starteter end housing breaks

1997 Chevy Astro 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

starter end housing breaks when trying to stsrt motor kicks back checked timing havent run compression check. I un plug the # 1 plug from cap and the kick back isn't as rough to break the starter end housing. checked timing as far as distributor no dtc codes. NEED A JUMP OFF POINT EXHAUSTED NEED INPUT ! THANK YOU.

That is odd that it will start with #1 disconnected. Once started, can you reattach #1 and the engine run smooth?
