I have a 97 chevy astro awd, the seal behind the drivers side cvj started leaking. When I pulled it apart I found that the output shaft from the front differential that goes into the cvj (the cvj slides over this shaft into the differential) has some play (slop). My question is, is there supposed to be play in this shaft or should it be solid (tight)?

It's normal. They all have some play where they attach to the splins. If it isn't excessive, don't worry about it.
