1989 Chevy Astro oil pressure

gauge drops out after car heats up, at idle and while running, will come back up and then drop back down. gunning engine has no effect. after driving for a while when the gauge drops down start to hear aliitle knock. I was told might be the pressure switch? what does the switch do?

Sorry to say but your oil pressure is Nada and the knock is bearings without proper oil supply.
