1987 Chevy Astro Engine Size unknown Front Wheel Drive Automatic 210000 miles

I recently purchased a 1987 Chevy Astrovan, expecting some problems, but at a good price. It worked for about a week witha little hesitiation at acceleration. Currently it starts with no problem, but when placed into gear (reverse seems to work a little better), will sputter and die. Any ideas?

For a start check the idle air control valve and throttle position. Check the fuel system pressure/filter
