The check gas cap light came on in my car. I have replaced the gas cap but the light still came back on and now the check engine light is on. We have tried clearing the codes but they come back on after some time passes. There are no obvious signs of a fuel leak. What should I do? Is it still safe to drive?

Hi,

I suspect the codes you are getting are related to the EVAP system. Could you provide me with the codes so I can narrow it down? Also, check where the gas cap seats to see if there is any rust that could cause a leak. I've seen that before.

If the codes are related to an evap leak, what I will suggest is to have the EVAP system smoke tested. Basically, smoke is injected into the system at very low pressure. Where the leak is located, the smoke will come out.

Let me know what codes you are finding.

Take care,
Joe
