The check engine light can come on due to any number of reasons. When the on-board diagnostics detects any fault within the engine management system it triggers the light.
It could be due to misfiring, faulty sensor, emission issues, vacuum leak etc.
When the check engine light gets illuminated, a good first step would be to scan and retrieve the trouble code(s). That can help with the diagnostics.
Most auto parts stores have code readers that you can use to retrieve the code for the check engine light.
