My check engine soon light has been staying on for a while now in my 2005 Pontiac Bonneville SE. When I was driving it earlier today the check engine light started flashing off and on, and the car started slowing down, and started vibrating and shaking really hard, and it would not go over fifty mph, and it started giving off a strong rotten egg smell. Can you please tell me what is going on with my car? Is it my transmission?

When the check engine light comes on, it is because the computer has identified some issue and has stored a trouble code. You need someone with a scanner to plug in and retrieve the code(s) from the system. This can be done for free at the local AutoZone, Advance Auto, or O'Reilly Auto Parts. The good news is that I doubt that it is your transmission.

Get it scanned and let us know what it says. We will go from there.

Hi FIREFLY99,

If you decide you would like to conduct the scan yourself here is a link to an article that features written step by step instructions and pictures explaining how to do the scan yourself. Also, I have included a link to our YouTube channel with a how to video on code scanning.

This is applicable even if your check engine light is not on.

Most scanners are inexpensive to purchase, you can purchase one online from sites like Amazon.com

Thank you for visiting 2CarPros.com.
