Hello,

It was recommended to me to replace the distributor in my car since it has been stalling at idle. I did that over the weekend and almost had to pry the old distributor out but I was finally able to get it out. I replaced it with a new distributor and not rebuilt and had the same problem getting it back into the engine. It was very tight. I did not want to bang on the distributor with a regular hammer but did use a rubber mallet and got it just about all the way in. There is about the width of a quarter between the distributor and the engine block. I did notice that when a mechanic replaced the distributor before either he did not get the distributor all the way in or there is another problem as there is quite a bit of oil laying on my transmission. Will that be a problem not getting the distributor to flush mount with the engine.

I started the car up and it ran fine except the engine light is on now where it was off before. I tried to pull some codes but nothing came up. What might be going on?

Also, when I removed the battery and the tray I saw that the left transmission mount was totally wasted. How difficult is it for a backyard mechanic to replace something like that?

Hey GLENN GILBERT,

I have attached a diagram for aligning the distributor before fitting.
It explained cylinder number 1 needs to be at TDC and the distributor marks aligned to fit.
The engine would not run right if you had this misaligned.

If you have the check engine light on you should have codes stored, can you borrow another scanner and retry?

The transmission mounting is fairly straight forward I have attached the instructions for this also.

Let me know if you have further questions.

Regards, Joe
