Hi:
The check engine light is indicating that a sensor has identified a problem. Take it to a nationally recognized parts store and have them scan it. Most stores will do it for free, and then we'll know where that problem is coming from. If the car is still running good, chances are it's an EVAP leak.
The rattle is common. Chances are there is a loose heat shield on the exhaust system. With the engine cool, the park brake on and in park, take a rubber mallot and tap on the exhaust system. Check near the converter and resinator. Also, keep in mind the guts in the catylatic converter may have come loose. If it did, you won't be able to quiet it and it could have set the check engine light. If this is the case, it will need replaced.
If it is a heat shield, I usually get 2 or 3 radiator hose clamps and join them together then strap them around the shield and tighten it. That will shut it up for you.
Now the heat. Is the engine running at a normal operating temp? Also, with the engine hot, running and the heat on hi, do both heater core hoses get hot?
Let me know what you find or if you have other questions.
Joe
