Hi, I am missing a centerpiece for my hub cap, it came off while I was driving. My service engine soon light is on. But, my question is, would something like that cause that to go on? Missing a hub cap centerpiece?

No that would not cause the service engine soon light to come on. You should take your car to the local AutoZone, Advance Auto, PepBoys, or O'reilly Auto Parts and have them scan it. Write down the code numbers and bring them back here. It could be something really simple, like a bad gas cap.

Okay, I went to my local Autozone, they gave me four possible causes, 1. Defective or loose fuel cap. 2. Evap canister cracked or not connected. 3. Purge or vent solenoid defective.4. Vacuum leak at engine. So I do not know what I should do. I guess I will try the gas cap first and work my way down.

Also, I noticed it came on while I was driving on the highway, not right away but about five minutes later. I am not feeling anything different in the way the car is driving, still feels the same as it was before this happened. The trouble shooting code is, P0442.

Well if the gas cap is old, go ahead and replace it and have the code cleared. You can do that by disconnecting the battery for ten minutes or have the people at the parts store scan it again and have them clear it when you get that gas cap.

Gas evaporates over time. The fuel vapor is caught by the system and cycled back into the system, keeping it from getting into the atmosphere and saving you some money. The way the system works is that the computer monitors the evaporation of the gas and opens and closes a vent valve to relieve pressure. P0442 is set when the computer detects a small EVAP system leak. The most common cause of this code is a bad or loose gas cap. Since a cap only costs a few bucks, go ahead and replace it and see what happens. If that does not do it, we will look at other possibilities.

Yeah it has to be the cap, because I feel no difference in the way the car is driving, it still feels and sounds the same. But, I have noticed I am using more gas than I normally have been, so it has to be that. Also, I am smelling a strong odor of gas. Anyway thanks, I will try that and see what happens.

Well you would not notice a running difference if it was something other than the cap, just a loss of mileage. But the cap is the most likely cause of the code. It is cheap and easy to change, so that is why I suggest going ahead and getting a new one and getting the codes cleared.

Yeah, but I know most places now, cannot shut off the service engine light because they will be liable if anything happens, unless they are 100% percent sure of what the problem is.

I had a diagnosis done today, it turns out it was the fuel filler neck that was cracked or had a hole in it, so I got a new one, problem solved.

Ah yeah that'll do it too. FYI if you can't get anyone to clear an engine light, you can always disconnect the battery for a few minutes. That'll clear it out too, along with radio memory and other such things.

Feel free to use this forum again in the future.
