Hi,
The idea that the check engine light is on indicates there are diagnostic trouble codes stored in the vehicle's computer. These codes can identify or at least guide you to the issue. What I suggest is to have the computer scanned to identify codes. Here is a quick video showing how it is done:

I realize most people don't own a scanner, but often times, a parts store will scan it free of charge. Do this and let me know what codes are found.
