Check engine light came on in March reads torque converter but have no symptoms-still driving it. Recently started overheating but found out there was no coolant took the entire jug to fill it. I unhooked the battery so I could see if the coolant tripped the light but the light never went off. Could this be a blown fuse? I cannot get anyone to believe there are no torque converter symptoms because all they are seeing is the repair money. Transmission fluid has been checked and looks clean.

There are about a dozen fault codes related to the torque converter and they mean very different things. You need to know the exact code number to get the right definition. Most of the problems are caused by electrical wiring and connector terminal problems, and those are often intermittent. Luckily the fault codes stay in memory so they can direct us to the circuit or system that needs further diagnosis when there are no symptoms.

To verify the lock-up clutch is working properly, once it is locked up above thirty five to forty mph and the engine is warmed up, hold the accelerator pedal and vehicle speed perfectly steady, then briefly tap the brake pedal. You should see engine speed pick up 200 rpm, then drop back down after a couple of seconds.

I went to Auto Zone in August after someone had suggested a tune up and got them to check it and the codes were P0700 P0740 P0700. I don't know how reliable they are but really don't know what the next step should be. I don't want to spend $1200 when the problem could be something less extreme. The P0700 reads that a signal was received that the transaxle control module has a fault.

Thanks for your help with this.

The 700 is a code for general transmission fault. The 740 is the actual fault code for the trans. I attached possible issues for you to view
