My check engine light just started coming on, the fuel is not registering when I put gas in it but after I let it sit, it is okay. The car loses power when I drive it, it seems to want to stop and go.

The fuel problem could be a faulty fuel gauge sending unit, which is a part of the fuel pump, inside of the fuel tank. The poor performance could be a lot of things, but that engine light is probably related. If your car is an OBD1 car (which it should be), then this is how to retrieve the trouble codes: https://www.2carpros.com/articles/ford-lincoln-mercury-obd1-1995-and-earlier-diagnostic-trouble-code-definition-and-retrieval

A test light can be bought on Amazon.com, or at the local auto parts shop.

So get those trouble codes and post them here. We will go from there.
