The check engine light came on today. I do not know if an oil change could be the problem or if it is something bigger. About two months ago the temp gauge started freaking out. It swings randomly between 125 and 185. The engine never overheats and no light was coming on until today. Any input will help.

The engine computer detected a problem, set a diagnostic fault code, and turned the light on to tell you. The place to start is by having the codes read and recorded. The people at many auto parts stores will do that for you for free. List the exact code number and I will try to give you an idea of what is causing the problem.
