Check engine light came on a handful of times for a few seconds?

While driving from Laramie to Denver the check engine light came on a handful of times for a few seconds and then went off again. I am not sure where to look or what to check. My friend thinks that is has to to with the wiring harness shorting due to heat from being too close to the head and the intake manifold.
